About

Our mission is to change the way we perceive and manage chronic illness at work.

Chronic illness has been somewhat invisible in the workplace. This is partly due to employee concerns about disclosure but also because long-term health conditions are rarely considered an issue that falls under Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) banner.

However, the ubiquity of chronic illness and its increasing prevalence in the workplace, demands a more sophisticated approach; one that is less focussed on issues of risk and compliance and more intent on supporting workers remain in the workforce.

Cultural Value aims to change the conversation about chronic illness at work. We use science and the art of persuasion to argue for a better workplace experience for everyone.

Our Story

Cultural Value was co-founded by Dr Peter Ghin in 2009. Over the years our focus has evolved from organisational development to delivering specific services that support organisations and employees manage chronic illness at work.

We are a lived-experience led business. This means the majority of people in our team and associate networks are either living with a chronic condition or caring for someone who does.

We know first-hand how chronic illness can affect our personal wellbeing, our relationships, and our engagement with work. But we also know that a strengths-based approach and having the right supports in place, can transform the lives of workers and enrich the organisations that employ them.

Cultural Value represents the culmination of my lifework as an organisation studies scholar, consultant, leader, creative, coach and mentor.

I've never chosen a linear path in life - instead, I've been guided by my curiosity, passion, and determination to understand human nature and the obstacles that prevent us from thriving.

My life experiences and research exploring chronic illness in the workplace, have affirmed my belief in the importance of addressing issues at systemic and individual levels to affect lasting change.

My vision for Cultural Value is to help reframe ableist narratives of work to ensure that people living with differently-abled bodies are are not excluded from employment opportunities, meaningful work and career fulfillment.

My daily movements are closely observed by my dog-like cat Charles, who never fails to remind me that I am just here to serve.

Cultural Value acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land where we work and live, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders. We also recognise that about 80% of the mortality gap between Indigenous and other Australians aged 35–74 years is due to chronic diseases.

Cultural Value is a proud queer and disability owned business. This doesn't make us better than anyone else. just equal.
